What are Articles?

Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. English has three articles: a, an, and the. A and an are indefinite articles (used before non-specific nouns). The is the definite article (used before specific nouns). Sometimes, we use no article (zero article).

Key idea: a/an = "one of many" | the = "this specific one" | no article = general ideas or plural nouns.

Indefinite Article: A / AN

Use a or an before singular countable nouns when the noun is not specific.

📘 A

Use a before words that begin with a consonant sound.

  • a car
  • a book
  • a university (sounds like "yoo")
  • a house
  • a European country (sounds like "yoor")

📘 AN

Use an before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).

  • an apple
  • an hour (silent h)
  • an honest person (silent h)
  • an umbrella
  • an MBA degree (sounds like "em-bee-ay")

📝 When to use A/AN:

  • First mention: "I saw a dog in the park." (first time mentioning)
  • One of many: "She is a doctor." (one of many doctors)
  • Meaning "one": "I'll be there in an hour."
  • With jobs/professions: "He is an engineer."
  • With exclamations: "What a beautiful day!"

Definite Article: THE

Use the before nouns that are specific or already known to the listener.

✅ When to use THE

  • Second mention: "I saw a dog. The dog was barking."
  • Unique things: "the sun, the moon, the earth"
  • Superlatives: "the best, the biggest, the most expensive"
  • Ordinal numbers: "the first, the second, the last"
  • Specific groups: "the poor, the rich, the elderly"
  • Geographical features: "the Amazon, the Alps, the Atlantic Ocean"
  • Musical instruments: "play the piano, the guitar"

❌ When NOT to use THE

  • General ideas (plural): "I love the cats." (cats in general)
  • Names of people: "the John" (just John)
  • Most countries: "the France, the Spain"
  • Languages: "the English"
  • Meals: "have the breakfast"
  • Transportation phrases: "by the car" (by car)

🌍 Special Rules: Countries & Places

✅ Use THE with: the United States, the UK, the Netherlands, the Philippines
❌ No article with: France, Japan, Brazil, Canada, Morocco
✅ Use THE with: the Atlantic, the Mediterranean (oceans/seas)
✅ Use THE with: the Alps, the Himalayas (mountain ranges)

Zero Article (No Article)

In many cases, we use no article (Ø) before nouns.
