What is the Past Continuous?
The Past Continuous (also called Past Progressive) is used to describe actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past. It focuses on the duration or continuity of an action rather than its completion. It is often used to set the scene in stories, describe interrupted actions, and talk about two simultaneous actions in the past.
Key idea: Past Continuous = action in progress at a specific past time.
Form: How to Build the Past Continuous
✅ Affirmative (Positive) Form
Subject + was/were + verb-ing
📝 Spelling Rules: Adding -ing
- Most verbs: add -ing → work → working, read → reading
- Verbs ending in -e: remove -e and add -ing → write → writing, make → making
- Verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant (CVC): double the last consonant and add -ing → run → running, sit → sitting, swim → swimming
- Verbs ending in -ie: change -ie to -y and add -ing → lie → lying, die → dying
- Verbs ending in -y: just add -ing → play → playing, study → studying

When to Use Past Continuous
1. Actions in Progress at a Specific Past Time
Action happening at a particular moment in the past
"At 8 PM last night, I was watching TV."
"This time yesterday, we were traveling to Paris."
2. Interrupted Actions (Past Simple interruption)
A longer action was interrupted by a shorter action
"I was cooking dinner when the phone rang."
"She was walking home when she saw an accident."
3. Parallel Actions (Two simultaneous actions)
Two or more actions happening at the same time
"While I was reading, my sister was watching TV."
"They were singing while we were dancing."
4. Setting the Scene / Atmosphere
Describing the background in stories or narratives
"The sun was shining, and birds were singing."

Focus on the duration/continuity of an action in the past.
