What is the Subjunctive?
The subjunctive is a special verb form used to express wishes, demands, suggestions, recommendations, and hypothetical situations. Unlike the indicative (which states facts), the subjunctive expresses non-factual or desired situations. In English, the subjunctive is most noticeable in the present subjunctive (using the base form of the verb) and the past subjunctive (using "were" for all persons).
Key idea: Subjunctive = expressing wishes, demands, suggestions, and hypotheticals (not facts).
Present Subjunctive
The present subjunctive uses the base form of the verb (without -s, -ing, or -ed) for all persons. It is used after certain verbs and expressions.
📘 Verbs of Recommendation/Request/Demand
advise, ask, command, demand, insist, propose, recommend, request, suggest, urge
"I suggest that he study harder." (not "studies")
"She recommended that he not go alone."
"They demanded that she be present."
📘 Adjectives of Necessity/Importance
essential, important, necessary, vital, crucial, imperative
"It is essential that she arrive on time."
"It's important that he be informed."
"It's vital that they not miss the deadline."
📘 Nouns of Suggestion/Demand
advice, demand, proposal, recommendation, request, suggestion
"We support the proposal that they be given more time."
"His recommendation that we wait was wise."
📘 Negative Form
Use not before the base verb
"I suggest that he not go."
"It is important that she not be late."
Were-Subjunctive (Past Subjunctive)
The were-subjunctive uses "were" for all persons (I, you, he, she, it, we, they). It is used in hypothetical situations, wishes, and conditional sentences (Type 2).

📘 Hypothetical Situations
"If I were you, I would apologize."
